At Ultimate Plumbing & HVAC, we know that hard water can lead to hard times for our customers. From laundry that doesn’t get quite clean enough or a shower that leaves you feeling just as grungy as you started out to commodes and showers that show stains even after hours of scrubbing with harsh chemicals, hard water leaves its mark in unexpected places. It can even make your tap water taste and smell unpleasant, making drinking it an eye-opening and unwelcome experience for both your human family and your four-legged furry friends. The good news is there are ways to help soften hard water and safely remove chemical and sediment deposits, making your tap water more palatable and cleaner for all your water usage needs!

Here’s how it works.

A few months ago, Ultimate Plumbing & HVAC was called out to a job where one of the customers’ complaints was hard water. After reviewing the situation, including the existing plumbing, we suggested the homeowners could benefit from a tankless water heater, a water softener, and a turbidity filter, which is used to help eliminate sediment in the water. This sediment can build up in water heaters, dishwashers, showerheads, faucets, and even toilet bowls, creating blockages and making the water smell, taste, and feel unpleasant for users. The sediment turbidity filters removed from water can, in some cases, be responsible for scaling, bathtub and toilet water rings, and clothes that feel grimy even after multiple washings. By making the water pass through a prefilled medium that only has to be replaced every 7-8 years and removing this sediment, turbidity filters can reduce sediment buildup in crucial plumbing components and help prolong the operational lifespan of plumbing, faucets, and outlets.

Meanwhile, the water softener helps keep your water clean and soft by using a combination of resin beads and salt to remove the remaining impurities in the water. As hard water enters the softener, impurities like sediment attach to the resin beads. Then the salt, which has a positive electrical charge, adheres to the negatively charged particles that cling to the resin beads during the softener’s regeneration cycle, neutralizing their charge and passing clean, safe, healthy drinking and washing water into the system for human and animal use.

In the picture above, you can see the original system. It needed a lot of help, as the system was original to the initial home build and not designed to deal with the sediment- and contaminant-laden water that was coming into the house. By eliminating the original tank water heater and replacing it with a tankless water heater, we were able to help assure the homeowner of an unlimited supply of fresh, hot water on demand. Adding a turbidity filter and water softener ensures the home’s water supply will be clean, soft, and safe for everything from drinking to washing laundry.

The water softener we used, for those who are curious, is a CSI water softener designed to last at least 10-15 years with virtually no maintenance. This effectively maintenance-free unit is designed so the customer only needs to add salt when necessary to keep the system working flawlessly. With proper and timely addition of salt to the system, the resulting water outflow should assure clean and sediment-free water to the home for most of a decade, with limitless hot water on demand and little to no sediment buildup in critical plumbing outlets like dishwashers, washing machines, and faucets.

When our technician, Adam, was done, the softener, turbidity filter, and tankless water heater looked and performed great on testing, as you can see in the picture below. This combination should help eliminate the vast majority of hard water and soap scum stains from the customer’s home, clothing, and drinking water for years to come, with only minimal maintenance and upkeep. We’re all about making access to clean, safe water for any application as easy as possible, and we’re very confident that our customers are going to be happy with the combination system we put together for them for a long time!
